Manual locks are controlled through your Parent Account. While you can set lock schemes for your student(s), manual locks provide greater control over your student's access to Beast Academy Online (BA Online) learning content which includes levels, chapters, lessons, tests, and puzzles.
This guide covers how manual locks work.
Note:
- If your student's current BA Online access was provided through AoPS Academy, you won't have access to adjust their locks or lock schemes as they are automatically set and adjusted.
- For instructions on manually locking and unlocking content, refer to our manual locks how-to guide.
- If your student is playing BA Online while you manually lock or unlock content, the changes will be reflected once they reload any page within BA Online. They don't need to sign out and back in for the changes to be reflected on their end.
- The Library and the Theater can't be locked.
How Manual Locks Work
In order to understand how manual locks work, it's helpful to know how our learning content is structured in BA Online.
The learning content found in BA Online's Class is structured as follows:
- Levels: There are five levels in Beast Academy math curriculum (BA Online and in books).
- Chapters: Each BA Online level has 12 chapters.
- Lessons: Each chapter in BA Online has roughly 16–17 lessons.
- Tests: Each chapter in BA Online has one test and each test has roughly 16–20 questions.
- Problems: Each lesson in BA Online has roughly 5–12 problems.
Puzzles, which are found in the Puzzle Lab, are structured as follows:
- Puzzle types: There are 17 puzzle types.
- Puzzle sets: Each puzzle type has up to 10 puzzle sets.
- Puzzle: Each puzzle set contains up to eight puzzles.
What You Can Manually Lock
You can manually lock the following content:
- Levels
- Chapters
- Lessons
- Tests
- Puzzle types
- Puzzle sets
Note: When you lock a level or chapter for a student, that chapter's digital Guide books are still accessible to the student in BA Online and the videos can still be viewed in the Theater; students just can't access the lessons or problems in the content that you locked.
How Manual Locks Impact Other Content
Manual locks impact other learning content in three different ways:
- They prevent access to the content within.
- Example: If you manually lock a chapter, your student won't be able to access any of the lessons or problems within that chapter.
- They override lock schemes.
- Example: If you set your student's lock scheme to Sequential and then manually unlock a level a few levels ahead, they'll have access to the first two lessons (and, by extension, those lessons' problems) in that manually unlocked level.
- They override other manual locks for the content it's located in.
- Example: If you manually lock a chapter, you can manually unlock lessons (and, by extension, those lessons' problems) within that chapter. Your student can then access the lesson and problems that you unlocked, but no other lessons or problems in that chapter.
Tip: To see how manual locks look in BA Online, refer to our manual locks how-to guide.
